The Hispanic Academic Achievers Program (HAAP) awarded a historic amount in scholarships on April 28 at its 34th annual ceremony in Kennewick.
Richland High School’s Isabel Therson was awarded a $2,500 scholarship sponsored by Tyson Foods at the ceremony. In the fall Isabel will attend the University of Washington to study medicine in hopes of becoming a pediatrician.
A total of 32 seniors from the Mid-Columbia area graduating this spring received scholarships worth a combined total $213,000. HAAP also recognized 8,180 honor students in grades 4th through 12th with certificates this year.
In order to be eligible for HAAP scholarships, seniors must be enrolled in a public or private school in either Burbank, Connell, Finley, Kennewick, Pasco or Richland, and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher by the end of the first semester of their senior year.
HAAP was founded in 1989 with one main purpose; to provide a springboard for Hispanic students and their families to strive for a better life through education.
